Laughter–The 9th Component of Wellness

I’ve spent a lot of time thinking, writing and talking about the 8 components of wellness.  Then it struck me, why am I not talking about the most important one of all–the 9th component of wellness–laughter.

The health benefits of laughter are undeniable.  Humor diffuses tense situations,  promotes relaxation, draws you closer to others and strengthens relationships.

Laughter affects you on multiple levels:

Physical 

  • Boosts immunity
  • Lowers stress hormones
  • Decreases pain

Mental

  • Eases anxiety and tension
  • Relieves stress
  • Improves mood

Social

  • Strengthens relationships
  • Attracts others to us
  • Promotes group bonding

 

Make it a point to laugh everyday.  Listen to your favorite comedians on YouTube or Pandora.  Seek friends who laugh a lot.  Watch funny movies.  Life is better with laughter.
